There is much anticipation in online forums for the upcoming film, A Secret Affair as there are criticisms. Both are coming from the fact that the movie used a rehashed formula lifted from another Derek-Anne starrer, No Other Woman, and the sensitive theme of infidelity discussed.
In a previous article, I have written how A Secret Affair is more than just a follow-up to No Other Woman as it focuses more on the relationship of a younger/unmarried couple and their immediate circle. It also stars some of the more credible veteran actors in the industry in supporting roles. But beyond that, I am looking forward to watching this film because of the talented tandem of director Nuel Naval and writer Mel del Rosario.
Most people may not know this, but even before the now famous campy tarayan of No Other Woman, Naval already had this formula mastered in the hit TV series, Magkaribal. This may even have served as an inspiration of sorts to No Other Woman as they even mentioned/quoted a line from the series when the aggrieved wife's mother said, "Ilabas mo na diyan si Gretchen Barretto. Sabi nga niya sa Magkaribal, ‘You want war? I’ll give you war.’ Anak, ako na ang bahala sa red stilettos mo!"
Naval is a regular director of Abs-Cbn's Maalaala Mo Kaya and is versed at extracting the best performances that his actors can give. Anne Curtis, during the press conference, even talked about how Naval would point out nuances like the rise of her eyebrows so she would be able to stay in character. We have all experienced movies that would have been decent if only the actors were directed properly. I think, given Naval's track record, it would be safe to expect a well managed performance from the cast in A Secret Affair. Finally, before he became a director, Naval is also an awarded production designer and this is apparent in the gloss of the film as seen in the trailer.
Mel del Rosario, on the other hand, penned the award winning screenplay of Wanted: Perfect Mother and Sana Maulit Muli. She also wrote memorable contemporary classics like Maalaala mo Kaya the Movie, Sa Aking mga Kamay and the original Tanging Ina film. She is currently the executive in-charge of creative for the surprise hit series, Be Careful with My Heart.
Given the talents employed on and off screen, it would be unfair to simply dismiss A Secret Affair as just a No Other Woman wannabe. If anything, this has the look and feel of another memorable Filipino classic that audiences would be talking about long after watching the movie.
A Secret Affair will hit cinemas nationwide on October 24, 2012.
